I noticed in a Antietam testgame that if one side uncrews a battery, the other side doesn't seem to suffer 25 men casualties for each canon. I was expecting that because that side can recrew the battery with his infantry the following turn and overall doesn't seem to take extra casualties. I always thought that uncrewing the battery meant that the crew was killed. Is there something I missed ?

To the best of my knowledge, crews don't count as casualties in these games and never have. Since the inception of Talonsoft back around 1995 artillery crews have been something of an abstraction. They didn't even used to include crews in the army strength, but now they do. I was told at the last Tillercon that John was open to creating real crews for the guns, but have heard nothing since. It is certainly an area that could use improvement.

Thanks Mike for your reply. It would make it more dangerous to put batteries within rifle range.

Here is an interesting question: If you recrew the battery does the game record a 25 man loss for each gun recrewed? I think it does but I have verified this. Anyone receitently recrewed a gun and checked the VP before and after?

I checked it and it seems the loss is recorded for the regiment recrewing the battery. You can only recrew your own batteries not the enemy batteries.

In the Chancellorsville game, it does deduct the number of men from the unit doing the recrewing, but it has no effect on victory points.

Since we are stuck with the abstraction, I think you ought to receive points when you kill the crew, probably at the cavalry rate. That would certainly inhibit the player on the offensive from sticking his guns in front of his infantry.
