It would be nice if we actually had election for Cabinet members rather than win by acclamation. I am not sure of the every instance but I believe that very few have been true elections. In the last several what was the ratio? Why do we have elections when most win just by raising their hands? I was in the last 3 if I remember correctly. 2 presidential and one Secretary. Does someone have data on elections in the club?

Just a concern about our election system.

I think that MOST have been elections, but some had only one candidate.

IIRC, elections with an incumbent running again had more acclamation results, i.e. no other nominees. If there was no incumbent running, I think we had leaned more towards a voting situation.

The only way to have an election other than "by acclamation" is for more than one candidate to run for the position. I had no opponent when I announced my intent to run for cabinet secretary; is that my fault?

The only concern about our "election system" should be that members aren't willing to step up and offer themselves as candidates.

Highest regards,

Right. The lack of nominees in NO way is the fault of any nominee.

I am not faulting anyone I am faulting the system. As the only candidate there is no choice, no debates no knowledge of were a candidate stands. Fortunately most have been outstanding.

I also understand that not just anybody will want to work in the Cabinet. It does demand some of your time.

I think that there have been more win by acclamation then by membership voting.

I also just realized something. CoA's are not voted in to the Cabinet. They are just voted in as CoA and are automatically in the Cabinet. And only a small proportion of voter for them at that. This does not seem right to me especially that they have a veto a very powerful tool. In essence someone who gets to be a Cabinet member who is often more than not wins by acclamation and or is voted in by a dozen members for a Key position within the Club. Note that the veto has been used very sparingly in Cabinet voting so that is not the issue. I am talking about representation of the membership.

One of the discussions for the Cabinet that is pending is election reform. I think we should deal with some of the issues and come up with a superior format if it is at all possible.

The whole idea of the CoA's is that they are the top representative of their respective side and that is why they are elected by that side only and have the veto, or at least that is my understanding of the matter.

CoA elections should be made from their appropriate side.

Pierre,

Rule 3.1.2.9 states that one of the jobs of CoA is to serve on the Cabinet. And this is only right since they have been elected - as per Club Rules on the issue (whether or not one agrees with them personally). I also can't think of a very good argument to claim that they shouldn't be on the cabinet since they are the leaders of their respective sides.

The best way to increase volunteers to serve on the Cabinet is by creating an atmosphere that encourages that. Points dont mean poop so raising the pay for a Cabinet officer won't work. People have to legitimately want to help the Club, have the available time, and have a good deal of patience, to consider working on the Cabinet. Many have the desire to help but not the personal time. We can't do anything about that.

Maybe the simplest way is just word of mouth. Getting people on the forums, getting them to vote, getting them more active in discussions... that's what will cause more people to volunteer (or so I think).
