I've had to change computers and went from XP to Windows 7. Not a fan of 7. Anyway, I can't seem to make the Overland game files overwrite. My opponent and I have played the same turn three times. It's like a Civil War version of Groundhog Day.

I guess I could just delete the existing CPF file and then drag my opponents most recent file into the game folder...

Anyone else having this issue with 7?

Thanks.

Are you using "save as" to direct the download to the appropriate files? Does it ask if you want to replace the existing file? Have not seen this problem, but need more info, I think.

Go to: http://www.hpssims.com/vistahelp.htm

It explains the WIN7 install situation.

I'm actually just dragging it into the appropriate folder. It does ask the standard "Do you want to replace the existing file." I click yes and nothing happens. My opponent is also running 7 and also with the same results. The game runs great when playing solo, it is only in PBEM that we are having problems.

I even completely deleted the previous turn's file before replacing it with the current turn. No dice.

Here is a check list to narrow down your problem.
Post the results of each step since I won't give the next set of steps until I see what the results are for these.

1. First delete the game file.

2. Open the game and see if the game file still shows up in the list of games.
a. If it does you aren't using the folder the game is using so whatever you have been saving and deleting from is not the game's save folder.
b. If it no longer shows up then move to next step.

3. Save the game your opponent last sent you into the folder that you deleted it from in step 1.

4. Open the game and see if the game file now shows up in the list of games.
a. If it does, select it and see if it opens.
b. If it doesn't let me know what the full name of the game file was including the "." extension.

Thanks Kennon. We started a new game and haven't had any issues. I think the other game file must have been corrupted.

Second game just fell apart. I tried your suggestions Kennon. No joy. Sent you a PM.

My opponent has been able to move normally over the past two turns, but the game doesn't show my movements. Now, I believe Yankees need all the help they can get (bless their pointy wittle heads) but it would be nice if my turns would also save as a file.

For these type issues, if the HPS site info (http://www.hpssims.com/vistahelp.htm) did not help, then the best, complete information would be to contact:

The main problem with Windows 7 is you can't use default to install games. HP Tiller site has information as well as a post I did 2 years ago.

It isn't difficult to make a good install of the HPS games under Win 7 but is difficult to clean up a bad default install. To remove the old ones:

1. Run the game's uninstall. Make sure you have copies of any email game files elsewhere.
2. Do a search through all your disk drives for anything with the names of those games. Delete every folder you find.

Now make a clean install of the games:
1. Create a folder for the games on a full access disk drive.
a. If you have a D: drive it is the best place.
b. Otherwise you can create it in the root of the C: drive.

2. Use a name that is obvious. I recommend either:
a. D:\Games\HPS
b. or C:\Games\HPS
I put all games into this "D:\Games" folder under the company name or some other subfolder name.
This will result in an installed game folder being like: D:\Games\HPS\Campaign Gettysburg

3. Install the game from CD or download to this new folder by changing the default path name it presents you during the install dialog.

4. Install updates making sure you change the folder it defaults to to your new folder path.

5. Run the game from the installed shortcuts, select help, and "About" to make sure the game shows the latest version. Also use Windows Explorer to go to the game folder using the install path and make sure it really installed there just in case you missed the path change.

This should give you a good install that you shouldn't have trouble with.

If you are having problems with corrupted email files start zipping your files before sending. Some email servers have a habit of dropping packets which can lose part to the game file without any indication of a problem.
