In several of the games I have played so far in Overland I have noticed that not all fords are passable. Is there anything on the map, or rules, that explains have to determine whether a ford is passable without actually endeavoring to try and cross one?

My understanding is that all fords are passable.

There are some fords that are passable only with cavalry.

Hey, all--
To be a true ford, a trail has to cross two opposite sides of a water hex. A "false" ford crosses only one side. The best way to check that out is to go to the close-up 3D map. The master map was made from period maps which would show, among other things, fords that were "horse only." There is no way with the current engine to have a ford that you can cross only with mounted cavalry but not infantry. If all fords on the map were crossable, many of the rivers which are counted on to be defensive barriers would become too porous to be effective. I hoped that in a small way we could add a bit of uncertainty to the terrain of which maps in 1864 were very inaccurate. The caveat being, reconnoiter before you send 20,000 men toward a ford that is not really there.
I also wanted to have a bridge icon that started off at zero crossing points looking like a ford and turned into a bridge icon as soon as units would start working on it. Since we did not get it with the game, mayhaps we could convince Old Banshee to come up with something like that.
It would be a matter of converting the "broken bridge" icons.

Thanks for the explanation. I believe this is unique to Overland (?) so I wasn't sure if it was a glitch of sorts. Next time I see a lonely ford ripe for sneaking a whole corps over, I'll be sure to send out my scouts first.

Thanks for understanding.
It is unique to Overland, because in no other campaign was "getting there" a big part of the challenge.

I was just thinking it could work the other way, too. You might assume it is not a ford, and suddenly the enemy marches a whole division thru the parted waters. (You might guess I've been watching "The Bible" on the History Channel. :)
