For all of you would be Civil War historians and students (with the exception of John Ferry who is a published author and Kennon Whitehead who literally knows everything about anything) the following is presented.

Who wrote or said this?

"...amid the uncertainties of war mistakes must be made," but "nobody knows the general who admits that he has made one."

Napoleon said that the best general is the one that makes the least mistakes, Sherman expanded on that.

It should be William Tecumseh Sherman.

I must admit I did not readily know the answer. I will bow to the inimitable Ernie Sands, who taught Kennon everything he knows.

One of my favorite quotes:
"Poor Andy Nave was killed. He refused to surrender and was shot by Dick Fields. I felt sorry as he used to be quite friendly towards me before the war, but it could not be helped."

Was it Capt. Sir Liddell Hart writing about General Sherman?

Another good observation that is quite relevant to our games here:

"To ensure attaining an objective, one should have alternate objectives. An attack that converges on one point should threaten, and be able to diverge against another. Only by this flexibility of aim can strategy be attuned to the uncertainty of war."

*google help required-much of the text is available on-line

Sir Basil Henry Liddel Hart is the source of the quote! Nice going, Prax!
