Not knowing much about ACW Naval warfare, in general, (but knowing much MORE from Ned's daily war thread), why are there SO many ACTING commanders in the battles reported? It seems that there are many acting masters, acting Lt's, etc.

I found your question most interesting and couldn't wait to find out. Wikipedia had a thought on it. Do a search using: ... Acting (rank) ... to find the Wikipedia entry.

The really relevant part of their article to me was this: "Similar to the many brevet ranks in the Union Army, acting appointments were extremely common during the American Civil War."

That was my thought also. With the rapid expansion of the Union Navy I'm sure they had lots of officer slots to fill and "Acting" is probably the naval equivalent to "brevet"

If you combine the contents of the Wikipedia Acting_ Rank article below with the excellent ACW naval articles that the civilwarhome site provides, then I would assume that those acting commanders were lower ranking U.S. naval officers/seamen and merchant seamen who were the volunteers to fill the fast expanding U.S. Navy.
