Sounds odd, right?

But ever wonder why our Supply Wagons are manned by the bravest in our armies? All hell could be breaking loose around you and there your wagon sits ready to pray and pass out more ammunition.

In reality it always seemed like these teamsters were the first to flee in any battle once bullets whizzed too close.

It's fun to ponder what if these wagons routed in our games as well

I think that is a good idea. I have played some that put a nearly empty supply wagon on hilltop to draw auto artillery fire.
The supply wagons should have more protection than we give to our cannons.

When I worked on the Mexican-American War I created lightly armed teamster units to accompany the wagons.

I don't believe the wagons had any inherent defense. They were usually driven by unarmed civilians. If a scenario designer wanted defense for them they should probably include some low strength company size units that would have to travel with the wagons.

Also, wagons really didn't route. They usually got abandoned. If any kind of route check were to be made on them it should probably result in uncrewed rather than routed. The teamsters usually cut the traces and used the horses to get away.

Believe if I remember correctly it is illegal to use them for drawing fire or protecting other units under club rules. Adding VP for supply hits helped discourage this practice.
