Except for Longstreet's foot dragging his attack could have gone in much earlier. His decision to not move anyone into position until Law arrived being one of the most glaring delays. How early depends on how many bad decisions by Longstreet in handling his Corps you backup on. Not bringing his two divisions closer to the battle sooner. Not sending them to the right so they could get into their start positions for the attack before Law arrived. Not having his staff check the march route. Delaying a four division attack by waiting for a single brigade.

The Union did have some of their best leaders for the battle. Two years of war had finally weeded out the worse and taught the others their trade. But the Confederacy had suffered the opposite. They had lost their best and promoted their weakest. A bad combination for the coming battle. Due to the losses at Chancellorsville in the command ranks the ANV went north with very few leaders who had served more than one month in their new positions. Longstreet being the only Corps commander not new to his job. Unfortunately apparently undone by having his time of the month or something.
