Technology marches on with Windows 9, now in the final design stages. (Groaaaaan...! Is this something that we really need?) According to a recent article printed in PC World magazine it's going to be God's gift to mankind.

"It also spells out in pretty clear form that Windows 8 and 8.1 is effectively the new 'Vista' for this generation of Windows systems. Like Windows 7 before it, Windows 9 is sounding more and more like the OS Windows 8 should have been."

Windows 7, 8, 9, 10...! OK, wait! Let me get my campy wardrobe in order so I can appear in the next big commercial for the IN CROWD! I wonder if at some point parents will be unable to electronically converse with their own children simply because they haven't made the "step up!"

All I really want to do is to be able to continue playing these great simulations with the best group of kindred individuals I've had the privilege of meeting: the members of the American Civil War Game Club!

Let's just hope that the Microsoft designers have a good, rearward-looking compatibility in all of this ballyhoo.

But Microsoft and the hardware/software industry want you to have to buy new equipment and programs. It's IT's version of planned obsolescence.

After purchasing three Dell XP systems c. early 2007, I haven't bought any new systems since. The boxes are now upgraded to Windows 7, Windows 8, and SUSE Linux, in various combinations of dual boot and/or virtualization. Especially for virtualization, I can certainly make good use of newer, faster, more capacious systems -- but not if they are Windows 8. Windows 8's a clunker, and an important reason why I haven't purchased any new systems lately.

I have successfully run, more or less, the JT ACW games under Linux Wine, but with each new Wine version, it's hit or miss. I expect that, if nothing else, Linux Wine will be maintained going forward. So between Microsoft continuing to provide backward compatibility, virtualization, and Windows emulators (like Wine), we should still be able to run these games one way or the other "forever".

If Windows 9 indeed has the rumored virtual desktops feature, yes, it is something I "need". Virtual desktops -- don't do computing without it!

As for now there are just many rumors but not many facts, I hope that the step taken by W9 isn't as big as the step from WXP to W7, that indeed brought some compatibility issues.
If this will be also the case when going from W7 to W9 has to bee seen.

I'll be sticking with Win 7 for quite a few years to come myself, regardless what they put out!

I have the windows 8 as of February and love it. However, it is not that much better than XP. I suppose the greatest change in the PC speed itself.
