There is going to be a 6 day series of the Civil War by the AHC called Blood and Fury..In one of the scenes a guy yells INCOMING...I thought that him saying that was strange...I looked up slang terminology and the only place I find "incoming" is a military word used during the Viet Nam era...Is "incoming" a term used during the civil war or which war do you think this word was used....Did the guys at Fort Sumter yell incoming when the shelling started..any thoughts

"action of coming in," from in + coming. As a present participle adjective, from 1753. Of game, from 1892; transferred in World War I to artillery; as a warning cry of incoming shellfire, it seems to date to the U.S. war in Vietnam (1968).
