In the manual cwb.pdf, there is a reference to "the Extreme Fog-Of-War Optional Rule". Yet there is no other mention of Extreme FOW anywhere else in any of the game docs. In the game code, there is just one obscure reference to "Extreme FOW", but it applies under ordinary FOW. There is no evidence of any optional rule pertaining to FOW, whether Extreme or not.

Was Extreme FOW part of the game at one time? If so, why was it removed? Does anybody know the history of this (if there is one)?

Berto, I'll check my files and see what I can find.

I would check with Gen. Ken Miller. He is very knowledgeable about the workings and rules of the game.

See below post as an example:

Hi,

I'm not for certain, but I believe it was an option in the old Talonsoft Battleground series. I think what used to be an option has become standard FOW in HPS.

Here is something I found:

I have revived the Extreme Fog of War optional rule, and associated its very first effect. (There may eventually be other effects.)

Hi Berto,

I found the Extreme FOW in the scheduling section. Here is how it works:

The Scheduled Dialog displays a list of reinforcements scheduled to arrive in the current scenario. Each reinforcement entry has an arrival time, an arrival probability, and an arrival hex. Note if Fog of War is in effect, then the reinforcements of the opposing side are not shown. Further, if the Extreme Fog-Of-War Optional Rule is in effect, the arrival probabilities of friendly reinforcements is not revealed. If the arrival probability is not 100%, then there is a chance the reinforcement will not arrive at the exact arrival time. At the arrival time, and on each subsequent turn if necessary, the arrival probability will be applied to the reinforcement until it is determined that the reinforcement has arrived

Yes, that is what it says. But it speaks falsely. In fact, in the code, there was no Extreme Fog of War, certainly no Extreme FOW optional rule. The effect on reinforcements described was folded into standard Fog of War, but the reference to Extreme Fog of War was never excised from the docs.

Then, Berto, what is the associated, very first effect that will be incorporated for the revived Extreme Fog of War option?

The very first effect of the revived Extreme Fog of War: The Visibility highlight will only show from friendly occupied hexes. In other words, if you don't have a friendly unit occupying a hex, you can't toggle the Visibility highlight from that hex. This is a change from before, where you could determine Visibility from any hex whether friendly occupied or not.

The second effect: Obscuring enemy unit force counts. Whereas before you might see an enemy unit showing "3XX Men" (or "3X men" or whatever), with Extreme Fog of War in effect, you will see "XXX Men" (or "XX Men" or whatever) if the opposing unit is in obscuring terrain, such as Forest. If Clear terrain, enemy force counts will display as before.

Those are the first two effects, just for starters. In future updates, there will likely be others.

Yes, John merged the Extreme Fog of War with the Fog of War effect. If Fog of War is enabled then you get the entire package.

Being able to see the percentage of a reinforcement group arriving sort of takes the fun out of it but perhaps some would like that option. Reinstating it would be a nice option for players that would like to see the percentage.
