OK, so where did the term "blue belly" originate?

Its believed to come from the Yank's blue uniforms...but it's actually slang then for a contemptible/cowardly person.....guess if the shoe fits....

Gen. Meyer, Sir! <Salute>

I think Gen. Miller is somewhat correct. It's similar to the Rebel reference as "Butternuts!". In general, it's a reference to their filthy Rebel butternut colored uniforms but we all know it's really a reference to someone with a screw loose.

Gen. Miller, I assume you still don't remember the last time you tried to "show you boys something" behind to the woodshed to Gen. Meyer and myself. In your imbibed state, you staggered outside and we followed you to the woodshed only to watch you fall over the logs on the ground and directly faceplant yourself into the woodpile. Gen. Meyer and I had to carry you back in to the tavern to cleanup the cuts and bruises on your face. The next day, when you came around, you swore, and told everyone that, Gen. Meyer and I jumped you back there when you went to relieve yourself. Took 2 whole weeks before you, and the rest of the Rebs, would sit and talk with us again.

Nah, I ain't following you back there again. Nothing good ever happens to you when we go back there. ;o)

Salutations!

Since we are telling stories.....let me paraphrase that great Southern Story-teller Lewis Grizzard
the Yankee Army of Tennessee was marching past Stone Mountain GA....125K strong....has CNN and MSNBC reporters with them.
A lone Rebel Soldier with a saber was on top of the mountain yelling curses to the blue bellies. Gen Meyer wasn't going to have that so
he had the meanest man in the Army go up there to handle the Confederate....Yank went up and within minutes the yank is thrown off the mountain and splatters in front of the General. Gen Meyer calls for Gen Hampel and has him send his best ten men up to the top....within mins all ten are thrown off the mountain....Gen Meyer then has Gen Hampel accompany his sharpest company to the top to handle the Reb. Gen Hampel comes down the mountain by himself...beaten/battered/bloodied...Gen Meyer asks...what happened.....Gen Hampel replies..it was a trick...there were 2 Rebels up there!!

A typical grandiose rebellious utterance without veracity and very mendacious.

I Tip my hat to you....your elegant/refined speech is beyond reproach.
Your Blue-Bellies showed the same daintiness on the battlefield.

Gen. Miller, I have to give it to you. That was a fine story. Your next drink is on me (Guinness, German Hefeweizen or a Pilsner are on tap....your pick)….Cheers!

I'd put that right up there with the Rebel camp stories of the Yankee Big Foot seen in the Ozark mountains and the others about the Lock Ness Monster sinking southern riverboats on the Mississippi. All great stories! :)

Thank you for your hospitality...
it is very refreshing to see not all Billy Yanks are as haughty as Gen Sands....
I always understood Gen Meyer was the "Yankee Big foot"
but enough of the talking...our throats are dry and they need attention
