DSOUND.DLL should be found in C:/WINNT/SYSTEM32 folder in WINXP systems. IT is, apparently, part of DirectX and the latest version I have is dated 7/9/04 (version 5.3.1.904), which was about when I installed DIRECTX ver 9.x.

Do a search and it should be there, if not, then perhaps you should download the latest DirectX from Microsoft, at:

<br />Thanks Ernie. I went and downloaded a later version of sound.dll. But Windows Me will not let me "cut" "delete" "paste over" the original file. How do you update this thing?

Try to rename the original file to something like: DSOUND.OLD, then copy the new file into the folder.

If not, reinstall the entire DIRECTX program.
