Gentlemen,

On Sunday, April 24, I will leave for a 2-week tour of Southern plantations and fortifications up and down the Mississippi River, including New Orleans, Natchez, St. Francisville, and Vicksburg. My wife of 25 years will accompany me. (Shhh, "Mum's the word!" SHE thinks we're going on a second honeymoon [:D] !)

Although the countryside remains firmly in Confederate control, I am told that access to telegraph wires will be scarce. Don't worry if you don't hear from me for a couple of weeks.

In my absence, Major General Chris Cross, Confederate Chief of Staff, will see to it that the dust doesn't settle on any paperwork that crosses my desk (as long as he receives a copy, that is).

I'll be available for the next week, at least, but I wanted to provide advance notice to anyone who might want to contact me. I'll see to any unfinished business upon my return.

Your humble servant,
LGen 'Dee Dubya' Mallory

Man the Gunboats! Prepare the Marines to board! This intel is better than a letter wrapped around a cigar! We can capture the Confederate CoA and end this shooting match...

Ok, I get a little carried away. Enjoy your time![:D]

It really isn't nice to slip things in your wife's drinks, or brainwash her with subliminal messages in her sleep... but if it works, I might have to try it out!

Sounds like a lot of fun.

General Sands,

Our original plan was to take a paddlewheel cruise. When we started researching them, however, we decided to take a barge instead (see www.riverbarge.com). On the barge, every cabin has a bathtub (instead of just a shower), all of the passenger cabins face outside, and half the cabins have balconies (which we wanted). The paddlewheelers have very few comparable cabins, and those cost over twice as much as the barge.

If we're disappointed, we can always take a paddlewheeler NEXT time! [:D]

The really silly thing (at least according to all my friends!) is we're DRIVING from Missouri down to New Orleans, taking a 5-day round trip cruise up and down the Mississippi, then DRIVING back to Missouri. Again, our first thought was to catch a boat in Memphis or even St. Louis and cruise down to New Orleans (or start in New Orleans and cruise up), but either way we'd have had to fly for one one leg of the journey. This way, we can enjoy sights along the way, on our own schedule.

I'll make a full report on my return.

(Well, maybe not a FULL report -- We wouldn't want the tavern to lose it's "Family" rating [;)] !)

A barge?

Well, I am one who likes to stir up things, but ...

A barge?

hmmmm... no. Too easy, I'll leave it alone.

A barge?

Have fun Dee Dubya!

A barge. [:D]

Don't let General Mallory BS you, it was Union troops who run him out of Missouri! Just wait until he gets to New Oreleans and sees ol' Ben Butler has it under control. [:D]
