I saw this article and just had to post it here. Is nothing sacred?

But ... this hotel/spa/casino is proposed for a supposedly unhistoric spot of ground three miles northeast of town along with other major conference and business facilities being built there. Am I missing something? Are we saying that the town of Gettysburg shouldn't have any other employment or attractions except for those associated with the battlefield. Where is that limit drawn - within ten miles of the city center or should it apply for 30 miles? I'm against even a convenience store being built on battlefield grounds, but other than battlefield grounds is a different story. Maybe there is more to it than the article says since McPherson and Shaara are against it. Heaven only knows that the press would NEVER slant a story!

That is different. There are some other things going on with portions of the actual battlefield, as far as developementis concerned.

Being a Pa boy, I've been going to Gettysburg since I was a teenager, only a 4 hour drive for me. Took the wife there for our first vacation together and she liked it so much we've made it a regular stop.

Joined a group about 16 years ago, Friends of the National Park at Gettysburg. They raise money to be used to preserve the battlefield and restore it to a more historical setting. Check out their website http://www.friendsofgettysburg.org/ for more info.

As to the casino, our wise state representatives have decided we need to have a limited number of casinos in Pa, whether the people want them or not. Supposedly the money made from taxes on them will allow school districts to reduce our local property taxes. And everybody with some vacant land and political connections is lining up to get one of the licenses.

They tried to do the same thing to us down here in Florida, but only in the two counties that make up the greater Miami metro area, and it was put to a vote by the whole state since it required a change to the state constitution. I think we collectively shot it down. We have enough to worry about with drug smuggling, illegal immigrants, and bad driving retired Yankee snowbirds... We don't need organised gambling crime as well. [8D]

Btw, if it is snowbird season, why can't we shoot them? [:0] [;)]

They just need to switch out Ewell's horse with Giacomo from the KY Derby so he would move a little faster on Day 1. ;-)
