You forgot one important consideration – how many men does it look like the Union commander shifted to the north bank of the river? One is a given, two is likely, three is a possibilty (an option on the Union command branch after the 1st small battle, and if they have a good idea that the Reb will try to hit them on the north bank with everything they have, they might decide to shift all 3 corps to the northern side…)

So if it looks like the Yank only has 1 corps north of the river, you could say why not go ahead and try to damage them before Jackson arrives so he can just mop everything up? If there are two corps, you might be more hesitant, but could go either way. If it looks like the Yank sent three corps across the river then they will outnumber the Rebs until Jackson arrives and depending on their starting dispositions might be in position to launch a pre-emptive assualt on Longstreet, Hill, Hill, etc before Jackson can arrive…

Things to ponder… that’s what make the campaign games so much more fun and exciting – the possibilities change each time and keep you on your toes! (Or in your saddle if you are Pope?)
