I live in Austin, have since I came here to UT. I am the product of a mixed marriage, my mom was born in Texas and my father's family is from Pa, and since I grew up in Maryland I've chosen to side with the North. Spent many a wonderful time at Antietam growing up. My parents would take us to picnic at Burnside Bridge and if anyone has the American Heritage Civil War book there is a picture of a small wooden boat there in the creek which I remember being there when we used to go...heck up until the mid to late 60's we used to be able to drive the car over the bridge to where we like to picnic.

Hi Guys!

I'm an inveterate "Web Crawler" and constantly stumble across bits of ACW Trivia for my pains.

I tripped over this site and article whilst lookin' for something else and immediately thought of Ye Texans.

I hope ye find it as interesting as I did - particularly those o' Ye in the Grey! [;)]

Enjoy!

Colonel Carroll,

Nice of you to share this with your Texas comrades, although I noticed your motives may not be altogether altruistic. I couldn't help but notice one of the two primary sources was from the diary of an IRISHMAN [:D] !

Al,
A few of our folks already tried setting up a new Government a while back.....the State and Federal folks did not treat them too well (imagine that?). I believe they are all in rather extended custody at this point....anyway, point is that I don't think we can take our state and leave.....I wonder if the outcome of the 2nd American Revolution (Otherwise known as the ACW) had anything to do with that? Regards, Hank

Above site has two accounts with a confederate order of battle of The Battle of Palmito Ranch, which may have been the last battle of the War of Northern Aggression. The Texas commander was John Salmon "RIP" Ford, (Rest in Peace), an extraordinary fellow who was a doctor, attorney, newspaperman, surveyor, congressman, Texas Ranger, who got his nickname as a ranger commander by ending his field reports of fatalities with "R.I.P." It could be difficult to surrender to rangers in those days. A more detailed account of his exploits and life is in T.R. Fehrenbach's book, "Lone Star", which I recommend.
Ol' Rip Ford was a state militia commander and the local troops of the Confederate Army chose to depose their commander and join him. Ford took a 1000 man motley crew of old men, young boys, and border trash and drove several regiments of union regulars into the Gulf of Mexico without losing a man killed.

10 Years ago you would have had a Yankee in Dallas, TX.

Born and Bred in Kansas. A Yankee State!

But alas, I have moved to Oz. Where they think the Wizard of Oz should be, but Kansas is the true home of Oz.

Okay, okay, I'm finally back online. I live in Plainview, which I guess is far enough in North Texas to be Yankee HQ. Actually grew up in Illinois and moved here with work and never looked back!

Well it is a little flat around here. You can watch your dog run away for three days. Look off to the horizon on a clear cold morning and you can see the back of your head.
