To my knowledge, night attacks during the ACW were rare, and successful night attacks rarer still. The only ones I can think of are Culp's Hill, Cemetery Hill, and Wauhatchie, where Longstreet tried to evict Hooker from Lookout Valley. None of these attacks was successful. It was not unusual for fighting during the day to carry into the night; nor was it unusual for forces to maneuver at night preparatory to an attack next day. I think the rules in the HPS games adequately inhibit night combat with the exception of the night morale penalty. I know of no historical justification for that rule, at least during the ACW.
