Has anyone seen that Talonsoft(Take 2) has sold rights for the BG and Campaign series(Talonsoft) to Matrix Games? They are suposed to be updating them for compatability with XP with help from JT. Also Matrix bought rights from Norm K for TOAW.

Phil,

JT had no control over the rights. Talonsoft (now Take 2) held the rights and sold them to Matrix. They've hired John on to upgrade the original source code. He's still continuing on with the HPS games as well.

Hmmm, this could be interesting. John is hired to upgrade games that would be in direct competition to his own games.

There is more about this in other threads in this forum and in the NWC.

That's not exactly true. First, the HPS series is very different from the BG engine and it will remain that way (plus it is being updated regularly). Secondly, If you have all the latest BG upgrades and patches, then don't expect anything extra from this new Matrix release.

Judging from the interview, see link http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/artic ... e=1&cat=52
Matrix may be going just about anywhere with this. From the statements made it looks like it will depend on how many games sell which will determine the funding for any real changes to the engine. It looks like their initial release will probably be just combining John's version 2 fixes so that Battleground will run under XP, a new authorization system, and maybe a few upgrades. Doesn't sound like it will be backward compatible with our old Talonsoft games though. This may make the games sink or swim depending on whether the existing players will buy the new version so that new players who buy it will have opponents.

If Matrix is basing their strategy on how well the BG games sell before they decide on what comes next I think they've got it backwards. For me personally it would take some major improvements to convicne me to re-buy any of the BG Games (much more than simple graphics upgrades). The reason I no longer play them is because of the design flaws (primarily weak zoc and over exagerated advantages in quality and leadership to the sides that lost). As long as HPS is around I will never play a BG game again (as is). Btw my comments only refer to ACW and NW games not WW2.

My advice to Matrix is if you want to sell games to any Grognards you need to do some work up front.

"Why would I buy an "upgrade" to an older version of the games John Tiller wrote???" - Don

Maybe because the 'uprgrade' might take the game in a different direction with different changes than what JT made between his BG and HPS version?

<br />I think that would be a given Al, that the games would be going a different direction. But since I am content with what John did and with 100s of scenarios yet to play, (I bought CP and have yet to play a game on it) I guess I will stick to the games I have and see if I can figure them out to where maybe I can win every once in a while. [:D] Then, if I'm still alive, I might look around, though I am pretty heavy into SWG with my son, too. And that is contiually evolving! Hey, we have dancing girls in the taverns there!! And if you want real time fighting against real opponents? There is a Galactic civil war going on and the planets are at stake, not just a country. Of course I'm a Rebel in that game, too, though I don't get into the pvp stuff much at all. [:D]
