John,

My OOB's site at http://www.brettschulte.net/OOBs/ does this for various battles. I've received permission from certain book publishers to include the information from appendices in the backs of some battle studies. I hope to add to it gradually.

Hi,
The best source of OOBs for the Union armies is Dyer's Compendium. Unfortunately, the Confederate counterpart, while it has much useful information, is not really useful for OOBs. You would have to go to the OR, and then they will often have OOBs for various armies. Dyer's Compendium is really a compilation of information from the OR, and contains unit histories for each unit in the Union army, as well as lists of engagements by state, the Union troops involved and total Union casualties. The fellow who compiled all this info, Frederick Dyer, left his family and worked on the compendium for five years. It is a fantastic reference, but unfortunately only deals with the Union army. But it has OOBs for every Union organization throughout the war.

John,

Use whatever you want. If you are referring to the AoJ spreadsheet on the Petersburg page, you probably just want to take the entire Union OOB file. The AoJ-specific thing was just a way for me to try to make sense of the major organizational changes happening between mid-May and mid-June 1864.

Mike,

speaking of Dyer's Compendium, my Petersburg OOB has the info from Dyer copied into comments for each individual regiment and battery.

Hi, Brett,

Sure hope you were able to copy and paste! It is very generous of you to make the results of your research available online. I had never heard of Sifakis' volume on larger formations. If it ever becomes available, I would very much appreciate notification.

Mike,

Yep, it was all a copy and paste job. Dyer is not copyrighted anymore (I don't believe), so I had the ability to include the info right in the spreadsheet. I had trouble just finding the South Carolina & Georgia volume and the Alabama volume. I've never seen that larger formations volume available at any price, even a ridiculously inflated one. I agree that it would be very interesting to take a look at. Maybe it will come out as a reprint in softcover soon. A lot of the other volumes are being reprinted in this way.
