Post subject:  I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

I am sure many of you are familiar with this Christmas Carol. We get the lovely words of the song, which omitted the second half of the poem. What I discovered today opened my eyes about what Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was really writing about when he penned this poem back during the Civil War. Check out the full poem here:

"Verily I say unto you, as things which cannot be shaken shall stand, so shall things that are of the
spirit - the soul of the Confederate soldier and the Rebel yell - fail to be captured or killed but shall live forever in the hearts of men and never die." -- Rudolph Mellard

Not a Southern song, for sure.

Longfellow was a true, blue Yankee. Born in Maine and died in Massachusetts.
