What happens if you melee a routed (but not isolated) unit from a rear hex? Does a win also eliminate the unit without anything else present? I think it works that way in the Nap games.

After seeing all the responses to my question, at least I don't feel quite as dumb as I thought I was for not being able to figure this one out on my own. [:)] Still sifting thru all the comments. Thanks for responses guys!

General Breen,

A Routed unit is just like any other, need the 3 rear occupied, plus the adjacent units to the front se t of hexes.

BTW, with the Isolated, Routed unit, you don't have to "win" the melee, its an automatic. So a Grade F, 15 man railroad cav unit can scarf up a 600 man regiment of infantry. [:D]

It kills me to give these goodies away to the Rebs...[;)][B)][:0]

Another interesting thing about this is that if you have two units facing different directions, and one of them has an open rear hex, both units will retreat into that hex. So if you have units facing in opposite directions, you would have to completely surround them with units to eliminate them in melee. Not recommended for units on the battle line, but something to consider when stacking routed units or limbered artillery. By the way, none of this is covered in any documentation I ever saw. I had to find out the hard way in Corinth a long time ago. They could probably write a book on aspects of the game that can't be found in accompanying documentation. But if you have a question, Rich Hamilton will usually get you an answer.

<font face="Andale Mono"><font color="pink">Major Krenek,

Gary, really there is no such thing as a dumb question or a reason to feel dumb. There are millions of hours of gaming between all the members of this Club and still we learn new things everyday. That is just some of the interesting surprises that await those that adventure into the gaming arena! LOL!

That's true and is one reason why these club are so valuable.

In addition, there are those things that everyone suspects are in the engine somewhere, but unlike this ZOC thing nobody can prove them. Like a first volley bonus (in the EAW and Nappy games). An obvious bias in the Reb favour. And Murphy's Law, hardcoded. [;)]

OK, it happened AGAIN! Hex of 3 infantry units, this time I occupied 5 of them with the 6th ZOC'ed. 2 of the 3 defenders were in column, and the 6th hex was in the front of all of them. Win the melee, and they retreat into the open hex! [:0]

The common element to both events was an (isolated) infantry unit in column retreating forward into a ZOC hex. Don't have time this week to run tests, but maybe that's the answer? But if it is, why haven't I noticed it before? Cavalry sure can't!

Edit -- OK, I had time to do the next turn, and occupied 5 hexes of one of the escaping units, ZOC'ed the 6th...and it died! I'm not trying to figure this out anymore. It must be something I ate...

Yours in confusion,
