Early as it may be in the contest, time-wise, it would have proved impossible to withdraw in any order or cohesion into Atlanta's inner defensive ring in a way that would've allowed any real defensive stand due to the more advanced Federal penetrations already accomplished & the current advanced placement of large segment of the Defending Army. Incredible further casualties would inevitably accompanied any such attempt to win a race already lost.
