I picked up at auction a copy of The War Between the Union and the Confederacy and Its Lost Opportunities, 1905 by The Neale Publishing Company - a first edition. Why there was a copy in New Zealand I have no idea, but it is a good find and I am looking forward to reading.

Oates commanded the 15th Alabama vs Chamberlin's 20th Maine.
It should be an interesting read.

Oates says the 20th Maine didn't charge and defeat them. Says they were retreating anyway. Yeah right, leaving many volunteers waiting to be captured . . .

I am more inclined to believe Colonel Oats, not that I am biased

This is the first ACW book I have read that is a complete first hand account. It is a great read from the CSA officer perspective. It certainly gives me a better understanding of the times and how a southern officer viewed life. A great research resource. For anyone who had family serve in the 15th Alabama it is a must have.
