Eh... Frank Sinatra in war movies? Imagine John Wayne playing a nightclub singer and you get the idea. Frank was great in From Here to Eternity dont get me wrong. But as a tough Captain in command of a guerilla outfit? I'm not buying it.

This is such a bizarre picture its actually humorous. You get the Rat Pack boys in Sinatra and Lawford. The Rat Pack broad in Gina Lollabrigida. For Star Trek fans look for George Takei in a small bit part. For film buffs there is a cameo by character actor James Hong and another by Brian Donleavy as General Sloan. And then, for those of us who need some actual action stars in a war movie, there is the great Charles Bronson and the legendary Steve McQueen in one of his earliest screen roles.

The plot? American and British soldiers helping the natives of Burma fight the Japanese. The real plot? Put Gina in a bathtub and have Frank walk in on her (hey I'd take that part anyday).

The first half of the movie is hardly bearable. Sinatra, inexplicably, has a beatnik-like goatee that looked just about as goofy as it sounds. Bronson throws a punch at somebody and they kill a bunch of Japs and things look up briefly. Then the subplot comes in and the romance part of the picture starts and you may as well turn the channel for a half-hour.

Then Steve McQueen helps salvage the picture halfway through by riding in on an Army jeep. Thank goodness for the King of Cool.

The second half of the movie is actually much better as Sinatra's band of guerilla fighters attacks a Japanese base and then breaks international law to go after a Chinese Warloard Clan that massacred some of their men. The resulting political and military fallout actually kept me involved and awake until the end of the picture with its expected "Hollywood" ending quick wrapup.

Hey, for 3 bucks in a bargain bin it was worth the price.
