Slitherine is set to produce Civil War II, based off of the AGEOD engine, but reported to have some significant changes to it. In case anyone is interested, AGEOD was joined with Paradox, but that broke up and are now in a three part Union with Matrix & Slitherine.

Slitherine produces quite a few game series, the Commander one, which I think is splendid. Also, Panzer Corps, Field of Glory, Battlefield Academy and Scourge of War as well as others.

I think Civil War II is also called "The Gray Empire Strikes Back"

I am really looking forward to this. My favorite games of the new millennium have been the HPS Tiller game (Napoleonic and Civil War), and AGEOD's Civil War. Their Russian Civil War is fantastic as well and some of the engine changes in it may port well to 1861...

Have you tried Gary Grigg's War Between The States from Matrix? In my mind it is a masterpiece.

GG WBTS is complex and rules dense - but true to the tactical and political realities of the conflict.

Interested to hear opinions of those who have played both.

You know Jim I'd play AGEOD's Civil War more if their PBEM wasn't so screwed up. I am hoping it'll be in better shape in this new one....

Mark - I prefer Forge of Freedom actually, a bit more simple but still robust. Plus I like the visuals better too....

Scott, do you mean the file exchange? It takes a little getting used to and then I found it to work fine. Or is there another issue? I have finished 6 or 7 PBEM games of it, including multiplayer.

WTBS is also an amazing game and is easier to play and complete than the AGEOD game. It certainly represents the strategic and political realities of the period. I have played it a lot as both sides, but not for a few years.

I never could figure out Forge of Freedom. I mean, I understand the interface etc but I could never figure out how to move quickly as the Union and I struggled with cause and effect in the tactical battles...There was so much of it that I liked- the units, the army organization, the economics, but I just never felt like I knew what I was doing.

Jim....file exchange yup. I have Windows 7 now and when I saved the game, it didn't save to any directory I could find. When I sent a file, my opponent sent his back and it was like he never made any moves. The system in my opinion is what kills the interest in the game for me and I am sure others.

I might have to give WBTS a try again. I also didn't like the music and interface compared to FoF too....

I have not tried a PBEM in Windows 7. Installing old HPS games is frustrating enough in Windows 7. When I got a new computer that came with it, I was lucky that one of my opponents, the Union General Bob Hughes, could talk me through it. Maybe he is not such a scoundrel after all...

The first question I always ask is:
To what extent can the game be edited? Loved "Age of Rifles" and SSG's "Decisive Battles" because you could build from the ground up.
To me, the ideal game would have Age of Rifles graphics, organization and point system from SSG, and map and oob sizes from HPS.

I think AGEOD can me modded but it takes some work...I loved AGE too even though the oob sizes were annoying and a lot of the stock scenarios were only so so (the Franco Prussian War ones were terrible, as were the Russo-Japanese ones for the most part)...

AGEOD is moddable. There are a lot of Mods people created for it on their forums:

http://www.ageod-forum.com/forum.php

At least there was.

Jim - Windows 7 and AGEOD's system is somehow messed up. I think it has to do with how Windows 7 has accounts and read/write permissions and AGEOD I don't think is capable of handling those properly. So I basically ignore those games for now. It is truly frustrating with an opponent that when you save the file, you have no idea where it goes. It doesn't go to the directory like it should....otherwise I'd love to play the games more!

Scott, did you install the game in the root C drive menu with its own AGEOD folder? My problems were with the program files folders and anything therein...

I would try that-putting it in C:Ageod/... and try that. I do not know if it will let you install it that way or if the PBEM will work..
