Gentlemen:

On behalf of our esteemed president, Bob Weir, I am pleased to announce General Ned Simms is awarded the Legion of Merit. His citation reads as follows:

"General Ned Simms, Commander of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, XIV Corps of the Army of the Cumberland, is awarded the "Legion of Merit" Medal and Ribbon for his outstanding service as an officer of the ACWGC Union Army. This medal is presented to him by the President of the ACWGC Robert Weir with the unanimous endorsement of the ACWGC Cabinet, which reads in part:

General Ned Simms is a very distinguished officer and leader in the Union Army. He has served the ACWGC in numerous Command positions and in December 2010 stepped forward to inform our Membership of the current happenings in the American Civil War by a day-by-day post at the Mason Dixon Tavern describing what actually occurred on this day during the American Civil War 150 years ago. He used as a primary reference, “The Civil War Day by Day, AN ALMANAC 1861-1865” by E. B. Long with Barbara Long published in 1971. It is almost five years since General Simms began this service and his last post was August 2, 2015, which detailed the pardon of CSA President of Jefferson Davis.

General Simms's willingness to devote his time and energy for the betterment of our club has set the example for all members of the ACWGC. This was truly a monumental task and for his efforts his is worthy of recognition and is here-by awarded the "Legion of Merit" with high praise."

I read every one of those posts and ALWAYS found them interesting and informative. I especially liked the Naval references and it was very interesting to see how the Navy, both ocean-going and river squadrons contributed to the overall war effort.

Well done, Gen Simms and congratulations on your award.

Well done, Ned! Few of us would be so persistent and dependable to provide such a daily treat in the posting of the ACW history. It is a mark of your own, good character and devotion to this club that you undertook such a contribution, especially on the 150th anniversary of the event. Well done, indeed!

Ned you are to be congratulated on your award, your long running post was most entertaining and as a work of pure fiction it can only but admired. Were it all became totally off the wall was the ending where the CSA lost.

General Simms,

Ned, the perseverance and commitment you displayed presenting the Civil War Day by Day project was nothing short of amazing and the services you have provided to the club (from both sides of the aisle) over these many years you have been a member has been varied and indispensable.

Congratulations on being awarded the Legion of Merit.

Thank you but actually it wasn't any trouble as it was a labor of love. Probably not in the way that you think though. You see, my wife has been the mud wrestling champion in Peevert County for 32 straight years. The prize this year includes the normal hog that will provide us meat through the winter but also includes a set of new teeth. Well, some of these young'uns have been giving her a run for her money the past few years and there are so many entries this year that there will be a first round bye for those who show merit. She got it as soon as she showed 'em this here Legion of Merit. So we thank you and if she wins again maybe this year with those new teeth she'll be able to chew on the hog meat as well.
