I have a question for all you guys. I have a game going whereby my opponent has noticed that not all the units fired during the defensive fire phase. This is at least the second time this has happened (I am not as ummm vigilant about monitoring these things in my games). My question is, have any of you guys run into this? Can any of you think of a reason why this might be happening? Interestingly, the first game this happened with was BGC and this one is on BGG. Any thoughts appreciated.

General Golen,

Do you have out-of-ammo units within range of his forces? They wouldn't be able to fire, and he wouldn't be aware of their ammo level.

Another thing to keep in mind: The A/I doesn't fire everyone in sequence. If there are four units together in one place, three of them may fire sequentially then some unit on the other end of the map fire before coming back and letting the fourth unit fire. It would be easy to miss.

I noticed in a BGC match that not every unit adjacent to an enemy unit during a night move would fire during the defensive phase. Disrupted units seemed least likely to fire.

General Mallory. The turn in question is the very first turn of Out of the Mists. That lone Union Arty battery didn't fire. Other than him I think there are only one or two other units that can fire so I don't think it was lost in the numbers, if you know what I mean. I think we have a legitimate ghost in the machine problem.[?]

If both you and your opponent keep the "FIRED" icon pressed, then each unit that fires, defensively, will be highlighted DURING the firing. As DW mentioned, they do not fire sequentially, but they do show up as highlighted, if fired.

Gentlemen, I appreciate your input, but seriously, can ANYONE ever remember playing games where the defensive fire left you with units that did not fire?[?]

It is quite common for me to see some of my units or my opponent's units not conduct defensive fire in a TS BG game. That applies to infantry, cavalry, and artillery.

Can't say I have ever tried to keep track (in fact I pass the defensive fire phase as quickly as I can because I find it tedious to watch), but I think I always took it for granted that units fire or don't fire, randomly.

I first noticed that units occasionally didn't DF in a BGC game several years ago.
