Post subject: AotM Change of Command
PostPosted: Thu Apr 28, 2005 7:22 pm
Gentlemen,
LTG Tony Malone, III/AoA, will relieve me in command of the mighty Army of the Mississippi effective Sunday, May 1st.

Commanding AotM for three years has been a towering privilege and an unending pleasure, assisted as I was by a most outstanding cadre of authoritative officers and enthusiastic wargamers. Due to some non-tragic transformations (military retirement, career transition, house-hunting, moving, etc.) I must stand down from club activities in mid-July or so, and will rally to the colors again upon settling down again toward the end of the year.

Particularly grateful kudos go to my Corps Commanders past and present: GEN D.W. Mallory, late of I Corps, and MG Mark Adams for stepping up smartly on short notice; LTG Lawrence Bertolino, II Corps; BG Kennon Whitehead, III Corps, and his predecessor LTG Tim Miller, currently in Reserve. And I'll send a couple of special jugs of fresh Boggy Creek squeezins through the lines to two gents who were of some considerable facility in the AotM: "Texas Ghost" Pat Dunkerley and "Ol' Blood & Guts" Ned Simms. Ever since you took up the Blue, we miss you all the time, but our aim is improving. More thanks to General Ian Rousell for furnishing adult supervision; and finally to General Calvin Graham, who blazed my path from Division to Army Command, and who introduced me to senior leadership by heartlessly throwing me into command of III Corps while I was away at sea for two months. [:0] Now I'm using the same approach to teach my daughters to swim.

Many thanks to General Jeff Gray, AoA, for relinquishing one of his very best leaders, and of course to General Tony Malone for bravely stepping up, thereby ensuring the mighty Army of the Mississippi will have the best possible leadership. [8D]

Big salute!
GEN Gene Nix, AotM

There's no such thing as Air Force, we use to call them Club Med[:D], in Viet Nam. While they lived in Air Conditioned Barracks and Chow Halls, we lived in Sea Huts[:(] (South East Asia) you'd be lucky if you could get a fan for yourself. But we had one thing over them, we had the best EM Club around at Camp Hoover, Danang

We had to fly (we were just going from Danang to Dong Ha) into Ton Son Nhut after we lost an engine on takeoff and we stayed the day while they repaired the C-130. What a place and you are right. They EVEN had PLATES in their mess halls. AND they lived in barracks and NO HOOCHES or even tents! We had about 70 NFG's with us and they thought they would see the same thing up in Dong Ha/Quang Tri. BIG surprise for them!
