We lost a great writer of history, I have several books by him, and have seen him on TV several times. It is indeed sad news.

He wrote all his books by hand with a pen dipped in ink, believing it was part of the writing process.

I enjoyed his books very much. I hope that the replacements are as good.

It seems he was the first author I started reading when I started my interest in the Civil War. A true loss to us all.

I am saddened by the passing of Shelby Foote. His trilogy spurred my interest in the Civil War and he will be missed greatly.

I will miss him too! For anyone who hasn't read his work it does a very good job of putting events in context. He combines the political, economic, and social events along with the battles we are familiar with to give you a much better understanding of the war as a whole. I say "read" but I listened to him on cassette tapes about 90 of them over three months on my drive to work and I enjoyed every minute, sometimes driving around the block if I wasn't at a good stopping place!

Salute!

Dave
