American Civil War Game Club (ACWGC)

Gentlemen,

Last year I participated in the first day of a multiplayer at Murfreesboro, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to continue. Now that I am once again able to monitor this site, I am curious to know how it turned out.

At the time I was forced to withdraw, the Confederates had made a fine showing for themselves on the first day, cutting off and isolating a Union division who had attempted to cross the Stones River in force on our right while holding back a Union attack on our left.

If there's anyone here who remembers how this battle turned out, please let me know.

We on the USA side decided that since the first day was so successful with just a Division attempting to cross the river, why not follow up that success on the second day with a whole Corps.

Having read Ken Miller's recap of the second day's fighting, I'm inclined to think the Federals, like poor gamblers, were intent on throwing good money after bad. In my opinion, Ken made an excellent decision to call the game after that second day, so that the entire Union army was not lost to the Confederates.

Ken, I await the first day recap of your new multiplayer with eager anticipation.

Gentlemen,

I joined the Stone's River battle at the beginning of the second day, as Cheatham. My division was divided, with two of my brigades having been detached the day before, and the remaining two brigades were on the wrong side of the river. Sure, most of the rest of my corps was with me and we had been digging in all night, but our backs were to the river and we were expected to face the bulk of the Yankee army when the sun came up. I was not too thrilled with the tactical situation, but my superiors (Three cheers for Polk & Bragg!) were not only able to extricate the entire corps under pressure, but lure the Yanks across the river at a nearby point. Once we were safely across (well, MOST of our boys escaped!), my division focused on holding the crossings while the rest of the corps swung west to help trap the Yanks who had come across.

The entire battle was a blast, with us issuing orders that may or may not be carried out, couriers getting lost or captured, everything (that is, my subordinates!) moving at a painstakingly slow pace -- I encourage anyone interested in a different command and control paradigm to give it a try.

I, too, am looking forward to hearing the recap of the first day of the current battle!
