Over the course of many years I have at one time or another taken out subscriptions on a number of different magazines on the American Civil War. I was wondering if any of you have an opinion on which of the present Civil War magazines is the best one to have?

Respectfully,

I always look at the ones on sale, but have never subscribed or purchased.

Curious to hear what folks have to say as well...

I have found North&South to be the best. The graphics are very good. The content is normally well written and at times in to areas the other magazines don't ever touch upon. Hope that that helps.

General Kunz,
I get a magazine called Vintage Trucks, and their parent company also publish a magazine called Civil War Historian. Haven't seen it but if it's anything like the other one it's pretty good. They have a website that you can check it out. The website is www.civilwarhistorian.com

I currently subscribe to two magazines, Blue & Gray and America's Civil War, a few years back I was getting Civil War Times.
Civil War Times, America's Civil War and North South are good magazines and worth the read but are pretty much the same, you could pick up any one and not know which magazine it was without seeing the name on the cover.
Blue and Gray is the best in my opinion, each issue explores one subject, usually with two or more articles and "The General's Tour" guide of the subject. There are also the regular features such as book reviews and Wiley Sword's war letters series among others. If I could only have one magazine it would be Blue & Gray.

Right now, I subscribe to CIVIL WAR TIMES. It is an interesting magazine and has some very nice features that get inyo the lives of individual soldiers, mostly through letters, but sometimes using journals.

I did subscribe to two other Civil War magazines, one of which was America's Civil War. It was adequate, but not as good as CIVIL WAR TIMES, IMO.

Actually, I would have kept my subscription to the 2 I dropped, but when I retired,my reading time dropped, as I used to do most of my reading at WORK! <g>

So, I needed to drop subscriptions and I dropped the 2 I liked the least, along with a couple other war magazines.

One that I liked a lot, because of its broad coverage of wars, from ancient to modern, was MILITARY HISTORY. I now confine my magazines to WORLD WAR II and the CIVIL WAR TIMES.

I have considered, strongly, to subscribe to MAGWEB, but am unsure if I would get the use from it. I guess if I were to cherry-pick articles, then it might be worth it.
