1. Second Bull Run to Antietam (probably starting with Cedar Mountain)

2. Chickamauga Campaign (starting with Rosecrans move against Chattanooga).

3. Grant's Overland Campaign (Wilderness through Cold Harbor)

[Had a second thought on my first item. It might be better to split it into two different games: Cedar Mountain to Bull Run and a separate one for the invasion of Maryland. Each really takes place as a separate operation and this would keep the campaigns from taking to long to finish.]

I base my choices on playability, because while Chancellorsville might be interesting on paper it would likely be a massacre in real life - a Union army as large as anything Grant commanded in the last days at Petersburg vs. a Confederate army devoid of two of its best divisions. There is no way that Hooker should have lost the Chancellorsville campaign on paper, and since we have so much control in the games, I doubt there is any way to make a "fair" campaign of that battle that would give the Confederates much of a chance without using a lot of fixed units and other "gamey" tools to prevent the Yanks from bringing their full 50,000 troop advantage to bear at one time.

That being said, the most equitable campaigns would probably be:

1) Bragg's invasion of Kentucky
2) Bragg vs. Rosecrans in Middle Tennessee (starting just before Murfeesboro and running through the Tullahoma campaign - with what if battles! - and perhaps ending before Chickamauga)
3) Chickamauga to Chatanooga (beginning just before Chickamauga and ending after the seige of Chattanooga, etc depending on the outcome of battles...)

Or, combine #2 and #3 into one ginormous capaign stretching the full year from winter 1862 (Murfeesboro) to winter 1863 (Chatanooga). [:D]

The true 2nd Manassas/Sharpsburg campaign resulted as an extension of:

A) The Seven Days, and
B) The 1862 Valley Campaign

Rather than being separate campaigns, the reality of the situation was that the Confederate plans after the Seven Days were very fluid and the entire stretch from prior to Cedar Mountain until after Sharpsburg was just one long, drawn out campaign as Lee reacted to the changing strategic situation - much like we consider the 1864 Overland campaign to be one long, drawn out campaign rather than 5 individual campaigns loosely connected. As such, I do not support the idea of splitting 2nd Manassas and Sharpsburg into separate campaigns. They should be one combined campaign beginning with Cedar Mountain and ending with Lee and McClellan staring at each other in Northern Virginia (if the campaign goes historically) where McClellan stopped moving and was replaced by Burnsides, who then adopted McClellans plan to continue shifting East in an attempt to flank Lee out of his river defenses, etc.

The 1862 Valley Campaign would be difficult without contrived time tables for the same reason as Chancellorsville - Jackson was quite outnumbered by the three Union "armies" he was facing, and if they had ever been able to join forces it could have been ugly for old Stonewall. The campaign would have to force more or less historic battles of Jackson vs. single Union "armies" or else face the problem of being hopeless for the Rebs, in spite of the poor quality of Union leadership (and troops, in game terms, I suppose.)

For some of those same reasons I am leery about the new Atlanta Campaign. After playing a couple of Vicksburg campaigns and being forced by the design into historic situations of Confederate stupidity where there is no chance of winning until the very last battle - maybe - I can't say I'm too thrilled with the idea of another campaign that features one side with a giant advantage and forces us into historic patterns instead of allowing us to truly run the campaign ourselves - I am not Pemberton, for Pete's sake. As such, I don't want to be forced to be Bragg, etc. either. [B)]

Brig. Gen. Alan Lynn
