General Miller,
Ken,

I was sort of figuring that you would be my opponent in Round Two. [:)]

And I've already commented to a number of Officer's that it would probably be my LAST ROUND as you generally tend to kick me all over the battlefield! [B)] But I'll give it a whirl... I think I probably learned one or two things about the HPS games since the last time we played... but I'm not sure that will be enough to bring home the victory! [;)]

Of course, you DO recall you owe me one, right? [:D]

Be seeing you on the battlefield soon!

Gentlemen <salute>

General Simms fought a good fight and dealt me a minor defeat in the Round Top Division. Only the efforts of Wofford's Brigade saved me from something worse, as they denied his attempt to regain the Peach Orchard objective on the last turn of the battle. My congratulations to General Simms, and again my appreciation for his putting this competition together.

General Blackburn of the AoS is my opponent in the second round of the Cemetery Ridge Division, and I am only sorry that we won't be playing the Wheatfield to Roundtop scenario [B)] Sir, I'm your huckleberry and stand ready.

My regards,

Col Neal Hebert

Adjutant, VMI

General Simms <salute>

I wish to report that the game between myself and Lt Gen David Ray (Union side) is now complete in the Cemetery Ridge Division - unfortunately a loss to the CSA, by a Major Victory. Great battle and great fun. Many thanks for running the tourney

This is for those members who have not completed their round 1 scenarios as yet. The deadline is fast approaching and I wouldn't want it to sneak up on any of you and result in a double disqualification.

----------------------------------------------------

From the e-mail notification of the start of round 1:

“This scenario is 12 turns in length and you have until midnight 6 March 2010 to complete the first round.â€

Just for clarification before it becomes too late Tuesday at midnight:

If your opponent never showed up and you established that with me a week ago, I cannot assume that the two of you did not play 12 turns in the final week. Now that the round is over, you have to tell me that he never responded or both of you will be disqualified.

If your opponent has gone on vacation or otherwise become indisposed before you finished, you have to tell me who advances (or send the story to me for me to make the decision) or both of you will be disqualified.

I don't want any double disqualifications because that means that an opponent in round two has a bye and doesn't get to play. However, I will double disqualify silence whether I want to or not. The games will proceed on time (translation - don't wait until Wednesday or later to tell me).

If God is willing and the creek doesn't rise, an e-mail will be sent to all second round participants later this week notifying them of the official start and deadline of their games.

Did I count that right? 16 Confederate club members to 22 Union club members made it to round two. That's not all that out of whack, and there's a couple matches still open.

Sorry Al but I think you counted that wrong. Deduct any byes, deduct the games where Reb played Reb and you get a better picture.
Scenario WAS whacked.......although I am surprised by the Cemetery results.

General Coyle,

16 Rebels are there, 22 Yankees are there. I don't know how they got there, but the first round wasn't that bad for both club's armies. [:D]

True, it wound up 24 Union and 16 Confederate commanders advanced to the second round but when you look at the battle records only and not just the advances (4 disqualifications) then it doesn't look as pretty.

The overall battle record was 22 Union victories to the Confederates 3 victories with 6 draws between them (14 Union major victories compared to 1 for the Confederates, 8 Union minor victories compared to 2 for the Confederates, and the Union won 1 draw while the Confederates won 5 draws).

The scenario also appears to be more balanced playing turns than playing phases. The only Confederate commander to advance to the second round playing phases was the #1 Confederate seed who had a bye for round one. Playing turns with MDF off and optional melee resolution on resulted in the most balanced results (8-8 as far as advancements but 8-5 in actual battle results).

Anyway, the e-mails have been sent announcing the start of round two. Commanders have until midnight CST, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 to complete the 18 turns. If everybody finishes early (that would be a shock but each subsequent round increases the odds of that happening) then we'll move on to round three early.

General Simms <salute>

Sir, my compliments and again my appreciation for your efforts on behalf of the ACWGC. I have every confidence that after seeing the results of the scenario in action the victory conditions might be edited to offer a more balanced outcome. We all agreed to fight.

That said, I anticipate that some Yankee officers that got an easy ride in the first round might face a nasty surprise in round two [:D]

My regards,
