Hi Rich,

I don't follow. How does the scale affect allowing mounted units to fire from the saddle.

Firing on a saddle with 125 yds per hex in ACW vs the MAW scale (not sure, but maybe 25 yds) BIG DIFFERENCE.

Mtd cav fire would need to be at 1 hex range, assuming this represented a distance up to 125yds (so it needn't be as far as 125yds, and could possibly be less than 20yds).

Thus 1 hex range in the ACW engine = anywhere between 1 and 3 hexes in the EAW series. In firefactor terms, that would mean that the ACW firefactor at range 1 could be set at the same level as the EAW factor at 3 hex range. Alternatively, the middle EAW range could be used to provide a mean range for the ACW pdt, on the assumption that firing might occur anywhere from under 20yds right up to 125yds, so the firefactor should be averaged out.

Anyway, surely most cavalry capable of effective fire from horseback would in reality normally tend to fire at almost point blank range, so presumably this should be counted as part of a melee? If they were going to engage in ranged fire they'd probably dismount in order to have at least some chance of hitting a target!

Perhaps one useful feature might be to allow cavalry with shotguns an extra melee bonus.

EAW series ground scale is 125' per hex, 1/3rd the scale of the ACW series. 3 EAW hexes equals 1 ACW hex.

Would love to have a map editor for the ACW series to make battles using the smaller scale. [8D]

Rich,

In fact, in the ACW, the range could be 1yd to 250yds. Each hex is 125yds, so it would be possible that two units could face eachother from the far end of each hex.

In Short, firing from the saddle is not going to happen.

I'm not particularly eager to see ranged fire for mtd cav. for this series. It would only really be worthwhile if more company (ie. EAW) scale scenarios were going to be created.

But it might be worth considering a melee bonus for certain weapon types, eg shotgun. In that case pistols and shotguns would lose ranged fire ability altogether, even if dismounted. I've never really felt that pistols should have any ranged fire ability anyway.
