Can gunboats run out of ammunition? I recall in the old TS games that the gunboats could run out of ammo like infantry units. Did this carry over to the HPS games?

I haven't tested it but I believe the gunboats are treated as artillery and draw ammo from the Artillery Pool. If it goes to zero they along with all other artillery stop shooting. I have never seen them treated as infantry with ammo depleted flags so I suspect the above is correct. Easy to test. Just fire one and see if the Artillery Ammo decreases.

Wow, Drex, I had forgotten about that game!

Its official! I have been in the Club long enough to have forgotten games. Or, maybe, its just aging.

I tested it as Kennon suggested and Gunboats do NOT use artillery ammo. They are treated like infantry for ammo purposes. I am not sure if they can be re-supplied by wagon though. I tried to make one of my gunboats low on ammo through either the scenario editor and a quick scenario but the editor wouldnt let me and they didnt run out of ammo in the game. Drex seems to remember them running low on ammo in our game and I think I recall the same in the past. I am going to have to keep digging into this or it will bug me.

Something else odd... I have never seen before... but gunboats firing can hit infantry and raise their FATIGUE. Yeah, fatigue. I spent a while firing gunboats at infantry trying to lose ammo and raised the fatigue of many infantry units without injuring people. Maybe they are dodging the shells? I dont know.

It makes sense. they were of higher caliber and of longer range.But its good to know.

That is interesting that they don't use the pool. I also suspect they don't use the infantry system of Low Ammo then Out of Ammo. My bet is they never run out but it is going to be difficult to test. Maybe use one of the small Shiloh scenarios where there are lots of gunboats and then bang away for the whole scenario to see if anything chnages.

I have some in a current Vicksburg game, and they do run Low Ammo but automatically return to full ammo your next turn. They don't draw from the artillery pool. Haven't lost any yet, so not sure if they lose any from the pool if they're lost.

They don't use the ammo pool, but if you have ZERO they can't fire. (if memory serves me correctly)
