American Civil War Game Club (ACWGC)

Gentlemen,

Ok...I'm at wits end. It seems that I can play PBEM for a few rounds and then I can't open it any further. I have downloaded Getty several times,play a few round then problems. Recently I attempted to download Chickamauga and now I can't play either to without deleting and downloading each time. Any suggestion on where and how to download two or more games so that they won't interfere with each other?

Anyways.....does anyone have suggestion regarding compatibility issues between HPS and WIN 7 Pro?

I am open to suggestions regarding other game makers if they are compatible to WIN 7.

Did you check the HPS website and follow their reccomendations? Did you install them to C/HPS instead of the default? I run Win 7 Home with no problem by following those steps. Hope that helps.

I got a new laptop (win 7) and I have a similar issue, when I get files back from an opponent it always says it is the other guys turn and the same when I send them a file. I will try this out - thanks Mark

Do you have more than one game (Getty and Chickamauga) downloaded to c/hps? I have downloaded to C/HPS rather than C/Programs?HPS..etc. The HPS site mentions that some users will have all or some issues....dang

I have the games installed in the "Program Files (x86)/HPS Simulations" folder on my W7 computer and they have always worked fine.

However this is not the default directory, which is "Program Files/HPS Simulations". When patches are released I always have to direct the installer to Program Files (x86).

It depends on how you have the security set up in Win 7. If you are using default settings on Win7 all folders in the "Program Files" folders are write protected. Since HPS games don't turn on Admin privileges they cannot write to these folders and usually fail. Until, which is highly unlikely, they rewrite the HPS game installers to use Admin privileges to change the folders to read/write or use the Windows data area which is impossible to find, HPS games will usually not work in the default install folders in "Program Files".

While it is possible to make the games work in the "Program Files" folders it is difficult. The best solution is to install it in a folder not in "Program Files" where the programs will have full read/write access to their files. For those few people to have completely disabled Windows 7 security there is no problem. Of course this exposes your computer to being easily hacked.

Microsoft system developers, apparently in some kind of drug induced haze, decided that code and data should be separated and code would only be installed into folders that used Administrative privileges to be written too. They then added this nightmare scheme for installing the data files into hash generated folders in a special area of the user section. Sometime go into Windows Explorer and bore down through the folders:
C: -> Users -> {your user name} -> AppData -> Local
and take a look at the god awful mess they made.

Most new programs get around this by using "My Documents" as their data area. There you will find the data folders for Windows complient programs like Quicken, etc. I doubt HPS will be rewriting all their games to use these areas.

No. My Documents is used by certain game for automatic installation of data files. This is something the game installer must do if it conforms to Microsoft developement recommendations. Only data files used by the game goes there but it has to be done by the game since nothing else knows about this. If you look in My Documents and have a game like Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator you will find a folder there by that name. It isn't where the game itself is installed (the game is in Program Files). It is where it keeps data that needs read/write access.

The best location to install HPS games that know nothing about Microsoft recommended file structures is in a separate folder preferrably on a drive other than C: so it has full access. I usually create a folder called "Games" on my D drive which is a 1 TB drive. That gives it a path of "D:/Games". Then I install all games to that folder that allow me to change their default install folder.
