Gentlemen,

I recieved some time back a courier from General Meyer proposing a temporary cease fire and truce to negotiate certain issues within our area of the front. We have had several successful meetings, and all was going well until Sunday evening. I was going through the lines under flag of truce when I was fired upon unprovoked from Union positions. Unfortunately the shot found its mark. I was hit in the abdomen. At first the surgeons thought it might be something that could heal on its own, but my condition has deteriorated over the last 24 hours to the point where they have informed me that surgery is neccessary today. I do not know what my future may be after said surgery.

General Meyer,

I wish to state that I hold you in no way responsible for this atrocity, as I have faith that you were in no way involved. I would ask that should you find out who the perpatrator was, being that I know punishment is not an option, that he NOT be commended.

Brig. Gen. Smith, the news of your injury is received with much consternation on my part, and something I am shocked to hear! Having lately made the same journey myself between our individual headquarters under the truce flag, I am all the more incensed that someone would look to cause you harm along the way. I shall not rest until I discover who is responsible for this crime, nor lay down the work upon which we, you and I, have so successfully begun.

Pressing duties have prevented my immediate knowledge of your condition, but my surgeons have been ordered to assist in all manner possible in the most efficient way. My latest dispatches to you should have been received by your staff, and I trust that when you are again able to resume duty that you will respond in kind.

God keep you well, Hank.

Thank you for the support. This week was a fairly close thing for me. I would not have made it without the surgery. However, they seem to have stabilzed my vitals finally and I am anticipating being released from the hospital within the next few days. Things are not real comfortable as it is not fun to have a 12 inch vertical incision in your gut.....But it appears I will be surviving this episode.....I cannot be sure of when I shall be returning to the field in active command as presently I am incapable of touching my toes or wiping my......eeerrr, well I think this is a good time to thank the dedicated young ladies of Richmond for their dedicated care even when some of the tasks are not what one would expect of a young lady in polite society.

Gents Hank has informed me that his ambulance was shot at by union soldiers on the way to the hospital (dang un soldier like - bush wackers). But there was some up side, Hank returned fire with his trusty shot gun - he got two and wounded three others. The AoG was going to provide an escort for when he gets out of the Hospital, but Hank said don't bother, just send me more ammo

Looks like I'll likely try going home again tommorrow......An on call surgeon tried to send me home a few minutes ago....Of course he did not even know my diagnosis......I was floored.....First time I have been openly angry with a Doctor to his face.....I told him he at least needed to read the file before walking in someones room and telling them that nothing was ever really wrong.....He did not even know I had a bowell obstruction.....Doesn't build confidence.....lol....
