You'll have to learn some new tactics though - more realistic ones. Changing into column to run away while in range of the enemy is not such a good deal anymore. The non-phasing side shoots at formation and facing changes, not to mention movement.
Like to attack in column? Good luck, they'll shoot as you move up. Maybe lots of times - good units can fire more than once in defense.

Thanx HPS guys, this game is better than ever, can't wait to see 1812. For that matter, how about considering the Frederick the Great period or the English Civil War? Dare I say smaller ACW battles or parts of them?</font id='Arial'></font id=orange>

Yes, the new engine for the Nappy and ACW series has this too. It is much harder to approach an opponent as they pop away at you as you come on. I have had several columns disrupt and therefore become halved in a subsequent melee (Nappy only - ACW still doesnt allow Disrupted units to melee). Also horse guns can do the historical move, unlimber and fire BUT will get shot while they attempt to unlimber and so on. Very good game engine - will really make us rethink our tactics.

So I hear... but those games seem a long way off despite the shake up at TS. Frustrating for the gamers and developers alike. Not a good move on TS / Take Two's part. Makes them look more and more like spoiled children as time passes.

this is a good addition, but unfortunately the AI is very passive, most of the time you can do whatever you want under AI eyes without being shoot at. Human players can better control defensive phase.
maybe the solution would have been to use both systems at the same time :
a kind of 'opportunity fire' during the players phase, and ALSO the usual defensive phase. So you have advantages of both systems.

Passive!?! You call getting shot at by the same unit 7 times as I move units up to it passive? You need to lay off the coffee. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

7 times is nothing. In a new 1812 scenario by Terry Lubka a single Indian warrior unit fired at me 13 times in a single phase.

I prefer not using the auto defense fire option on without the manual defensive fire option on. I don't think the "machine gun" opportunity fire is very realistic. Why? because I'm a reenactor. You'd be amazed how fast a unit can cross ground to get to their oposition.
