So Microsoft has issued a small update that allows the forced install of Windows 10. (See this article at Computerworld: http://www.computerworld.com/article/30 ... actic.html )

Clicking the "X" close out button was rewritten to actually accept the install, without users knowing that function changed.

Has anyone found a successful way to not allow the update to even start?? I've read some input in this article at the Guardian, but not sure if what folks in it did actually worked:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... -frontline

So looking to confirm from someone who has successfully stopped it and what they did to do it.

Use GWX Control Panel: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ I've used it on all my Win 7 installs that I want to keep.

Why upgrade to 10, what is better, or is it a support issue with 7?

Main reason is that Win 10 is free until at least July. I can always revert to 7, but so far 10 has been solid. There are other things like DX 12 if that matters to you. I had Win 7 on my two 8-year old Dell laptops, but updated them both to SSD and decided to try 10 for kicks. Surprisingly it installed faster and found drivers better than 7 did when I installed it fresh a couple months prior. Also, the updates actually work in 10. It took 3 days for Win 7 to find updates and install them. MS is making t harder to live with 7 every day.

I'm hoping to buy enough time so I can take this one off the grid at some point and just buy a new one to keep up with MS' nonsense and play the newer stuff. This PC I didn't buy too long ago, so I'm inclined to keep it going, like my old XP machine still is. I'll use it to play our games probably....
