Post subject:  Unit control at the tactical level
Gentlemen, greetings.

For my first post I would like to inquire of where one could go to read about company level control. I would like to know how they were handled, how stragglers were consolidated and what was SOP for dealing with them (try to return to their units, attach to the closest company or form ad hoc?) how exactly was ammunition replenished during combat ect ect. Basically everything I have ever read has dealt with Bn and above and looks at any situation from the macro perspective. Is there something that looks at the details of the era's armies?

I am fortunate to have for an employee and friend an individual who works on the Battles of the Age of Reason board game series. During conversation with him it became quite clear that my mental picture of either a 1750s or 1800s battlefield had no basis in reality. In particular depth of units. I would like to fix that but need to know exactly how the companies acted in relation to one another INSIDE of the Bns.

Don't know if these will help or you've read them, but the closest ones I know of are:

Christopher Duffy: Instrument of War the Austrian Army in the 7 Years War
Christopher Duffy: The Military Experience in the Age of Reason
Christopher Duffy: Fredrick the Great's Army

Books that go into detail in specific campaigns:

Benedict Arnold's Army by Arthur Lefkowitz
Forty Miles a Day on Beans and Hay by Don Rickey Jr. (Mainly 1860s and 1870s specific to the US Army in the Western Frontier)

Brent Nosworthy's books are going to be very good for you in this. Maybe not all the questions you ask, but a great start.

I leaned heavily on Anatomy of Victory for SYW, and he's got a comperable volume out on Napoleonic era.
