I think no one film will not be able to convey the scale of the book. this is Iliad of 19th century.

Is the scene of sibling incest true to the book?

Not, of course!!! It is ' a scat to the contemporary mode'.

At least, I definitely like one thing there: the main heroes are young people really as they were in the book; because the old Russian (Bondarchuk's) screening has this drawback.

I agree with Repnin---the original Russian production may be vastly superior in nearly all aspects, but I think that the cast is superb in keeping with the spirit--the women are hardly more than girls (well, at the start many ARE teenage girls) and the young men were young.

I really am not sure why they thought to put in the incest thing--it does not really had to the characters moral structure etc and it is not a shortcut to explain the morality or choices of people in the book..

I have probably watched about 1.5 hours so far and I am so far able to enjoy it for what is it---an energetic adaptation that lacks the artistry of the old Russian version...

Am in Kuala Lumpur - wife and I visiting (imposing) ourselves on family. Have set programme to record series (probably had bl**dy power cut or Cameron agreeing to sell us out).

Return to land of nod next month - hey ho Spring: cricket, daffs, wine...
