So Microsoft has issued a small update that allows the forced install of Windows 10. (See this article at Computerworld: http://www.computerworld.com/article/30 ... actic.html )

Clicking the "X" close out button was rewritten to actually accept the install, without users knowing that function changed.

Has anyone found a successful way to not allow the update to even start?? I've read some input in this article at the Guardian, but not sure if what folks in it did actually worked:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... -frontline

So looking to confirm from someone who has successfully stopped it and what they did to do it.

It REALLY is past time for a CLASS ACTION lawsuit. Not only does this CRAP cause you to lose valuable time but many users are not up to the IT Tech Level to capably bypass all of that junk.

I say get with the lawyers and let them hit MS with a lawsuit. No more forced anything. We didn't buy the dumb product to be forced to upgrade. And "x" means exit in any man's language.

Ok - nightly venting concluded! :frenchlol:

I'm on win 7 and want to keep it! I hate win 10.

I kept getting an annoying pop up, saying update now or later (never not an option). This evolved into now or later today. At least I could close it. To stop the pop up (and I assume stop any nasty upgrade process), a month ago I followed these instructions and touch wood, it's worked for me. For now.

To hide the Get Windows 10 app and notifications about the upgrade:

Right-click (or press and hold) the Taskbar, then select Properties.
On the Taskbar tab, select Customise… for the Notification area.
In the Notification Area Icons window, for the GWX (Get Windows 10) icon, select Hide icon and notifications.

Extremely frustrating! I do hope they get sued or regulatory action kicks in somehow.

There are a few more articles:

This one is as of yesterday - http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windo ... s-3614204/

From March - http://www.zdnet.com/article/how-existi ... 10-update/

Might help to take a look at MS's site itself, helps understand service/support, if you can read through it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle?C2=14019

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lif ... msl_policy

I'm still trying to process the info & figure it out. I have the one critical update, KB3035583, set to install and can't turn my machine off, as it'll install it. I need to back my system up first and then see what I can do about it. It looks like, if successful, folks will only get 4 more years or so with Windows 7 as is before all support stops. Still a pain in the a$$ and I am leaving town tonight, so getting it squared away is a huge deal....

I have to say I installed windows 10 and have had no problems other than installing my new Mcafee anti-virus software which did not want to go in. Managed in the end with some tech support.

I did think that windows 10 was an option or at least it was and was only available free as an upgrade until middle of this year then it was to be purchased, but I did receive those annoying emails and pop-ups until I decided what the hell go for it.

I know people have had problems with emails and that and hence I don't and never will use outlook for my games, I tend to use Gmail and never had any problems with that what so ever.

But apart from the emails and pop-ups appearing from time to time, I cant say I was forced to upgrade and install windows 10.

I just want to stick with what I'm used to.

Scott, it seems after it has autoinstalled, if you Decline the legal agreement, it reverts to Win 7.

See what happens when I get there, I am backing up now, but it's gonna take a long while. Going in priority order of what certainly needs it and what can be let go & found after if I don't have time before we leave.....

My hope is to deny or remove the install of the update that triggers it, so I don't have to do any of the other steps. I want to have the choice as to when I upgrade. My machine is still rather new and long term I want to be able to keep it running, off the grid even, when the times comes, like I do for an old XP machine. I still have needs for it and it is over 10 years old now. Same with this one. I don't buy new machines often, so having them to meet my needs for the long term is desired. I think a fair amount of folks feel that way too....

Plus it is always good to wait and let all the issues shake out.

Scott..

That KB3035583 Can be installed without wiping out your existing win 7.

All it does is prompt you tominstall winblows 10.

Once you have installed it, you can uninstall it and have the windows update feature ignore it going forward. I did that and it has worked.

Thanks John! I did get it figured out. I used the Never 10 & then figured out I needed to hide that KB number file as it was queued to install on shutdown. Gone! Then set update to allow me to pick downloads and installs.

I was wondering why I didn't have the notice to clean up space, but that's because that KB number had not installed. Thankful got it done. One less thing while we're away. :frenchsalute:

Backup of files took most of the day as it was. :frenchcool
