Ok ... name this French Revolutionary War battle (and the year) where a balloon was first used for military purposes. Name the balloon if you can!

Am working on the order of battle for this one and its been fun.

Fleurus, 1795, if memory helps. Do not know the name.

Excellent answers! Fleurus is correct and Mark also got the name of the balloon correct.

Thanks for the link too.

I am working on the battle and have added the balloon into the OB. We will use a 26 level hill to put the "airship" on as a reinforcement. There will be a variable withdraw (3%) to allow for the possibility that the balloon develops problems. Visibility while the balloon is up is 180 hexes. At 26 levels high they can see over most of the hills but there are still dead spots.

There will be balloon and "no balloon" versions of the battle for those that think its a major distraction.

The truth is: the French could know where large bodies of Austrians were moving.

I thought of using a Supply Wagon type of unit for the balloon. You only see ? on the unit that way.

Having fun with this design. A lot of creativity here.

The OBs are the hardest part. While there is decent information available on the strengths of the French armies the Allies are much harder to discover. Doing my best here. So far I have finished First Stockach and Valmy. Both are in testing. Many other battle are done. Eventually we will cover all of the major (and some minor) battles of the period 1792-1795. The emphasis of this game is on the campaigns of 1796-1800. Four campaigns primarily. Holland 1799, Germany/Switzerland 1796, 1799, 1800.

The team is off and running on testing the battles. Fleurus will be up next on the list for them.

When will the game be done? Ha, like my mom used to say when I would ask "when is dinner going to be ready?" Answer: when its done! :russianveryhappy:

As usual I am excited to work on these battles. Even though these early battles do not produce the level of enthusiasm that the later Napoleonic War battles do those have been played to death and folks lately are interested in the obscure battles more and more. Just note the rise of "obscure battles" in books, wargames and miniature gaming. Paco put me on to "La Souffre" (often known as the "Last Battle of the Napoleonic Wars) for the 1814 game because he did a "Napoleon's Battles" scenario of the batte at a convention.

I had never heard of the battle but it was fun to research and playtest. I highly recommend the scenario. Look in the 1814 game for it. It was sort of a "bonus" battle I added in near the end of production.
