| Post subject: | Places to visit in Saxony |
I am off to Saxony in May, planning to visit the fields of Lutzen, Bautzen and Dresden. Can anyone recommend any buildings, museums, archives, bookstores etc that are worth a visit? I am particularly interested in personal accounts of local people about the 1813 campaign but all aspects are of interest. If anyone here is local to the area and would like to pass a day touring a battlefield please let me know Regards Mark |

This is not a Napoleonic location but you could easily get in a trip of Colditz Castle on your way from Dresden to Leipzig (its a tad out of the way - SE of Leipzig). Bill Thanks for the excellent suggestion. The Prussians and some of Winzingerode's cavalry withdrew through Colditz after Lutzen. On 5th May, when Eugene debouched from the forest of Colditz with MacDonald's XI corps, he found Steinmetz with a brigade drawn up to dispute the crossing of the Mulde. As I recall the engagement was brief and Steinmetz was manoeuvered out of this position but it almost resulted in Miloradowich, who was crossing the Mulde at Rochlitz being cut off, so was potentially a significant affair. I must re-read my notes on the engagement. It never occurred to me to check out the infamous castle at Colditz though. Thanks again Regards Mark |

Colditz is where they would put the best escape artists. Along with the book The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill the book I have read on Colditz is the best about busting out of a prisoner of war camp. Despite being considered "escape proof" several POWs escaped from the castle. Oberst-Lt Wilhelm Peters 2nd Kuirassiers, Austrian Army |

This was made into a very good television series (probably in the 70's) and a less good (IMHO), television film. I even have the board game somewhere from my childhood [:)] Let me know if I can get you any maps of the area, I know what a PITA it can be trying to get them from Omni Best Regards Mark |
