Al - can you remember anyone on our Eckmuhl team that was terribly pro-French (meaning I agree with your viewpoint)? If anything all of the guys are good historians with maybe one or two exceptions and they have more than made up for their lack of knowledge in the last few years. Thus, the charge that we are francophiles is not true. If anything we would say that the Peninsular Wars game is a great title to work on due to the dollar potential as many Brits like the subject and are heavily into gaming. I mean, if I had a choice I would have done Peninsular Wars from that perspective over Wagram or Eckmuhl.
However, the Austrians hadnt been modeled in the series and I wanted to see if we could get some changes made that would accurately depict their differences in the period.
Thus to answer the first question, yes, we talked about a French and Allied movement rate but it wasnt accepted at the time. Too much recoding and all that. Yes, the Austrians may have been slower marchers but we also dont have fatigue accumulation during movement and that might be something to ask for.
I also understand one thing - Masse could easily form square over a "regular" column of the period (realizing that there were some five to six variations on this name).
Right now I would prefer to concentrate on seeing new titles come out that are favorites with the MAJORITY of gamers - not just a few. And we held a poll a year and a half ago and the results were overwhelming towards changes like what you propose. Different movement rates for each nationality and so on.
Edited - Oh yes, I think that when the time comes the Scenario Designer for Peninsular Battles/Campaigns will find a Brit that has a very fair approach to the games. I found several German and French sources as well as Italian and British sources for the Eckmuhl and Wagram game. One of them (without my knowledge) went to the Sacile battlefield and while I was at home from work one day, sent me images of the battlefield. He was equipped with a digital camera, laptop, cell phone and ISP! Now that is what I call battlefield covereage! Many people contribute to our games. I tried to name as many as possible in the credits.
