Scenario Field Guides Home

The field guides found here in the War College are meant to be a quick and simple introduction to the numerous scenarios in the HPS games. Each one will be structured in a similar fashion with an Order of Battle for each side accompanied by troop totals, breakdowns, and a Average Quality (AQ) rating. The calculation used to determine this is simple. An “A” regiment would receive five points, a “B” regiment four points and so on down to one point for an “E” and zero points for an “F.” You can then add up the numerical totals for a brigade and divide the total number by the number of regiments to get the Average Quality. For example – a brigade of five regiments with two “B’s” and three “C’s” would have a total of seventeen points (4+4+3+3+3=17), this number is then divided by the number of regiments (17/5=3.4) to get the Average Quality of 3.4 out of 5 for that brigade.

After the Order of Battle you will find a brief section comparing the armies. This section will only cover simple comparisons such as numbers and quality. It may also include a noteworthy fact or two that should be kept in mind while determining your strategy in a battle.

The final section of the guide is about simple strategy tips and advice that I believe may be important to the battle. This can include important entry information, quickest routes, unexpected problems, or anything I run across while studying the field.

There may also be occasional added sections when I feel something is especially warranting of mention. I will include these as needed and if you run across one I would be sure to pay close attention to it. As my old professors used to say, “I wouldn’t write it down if it wasn’t important!”

I have, obviously, not been able to play all of the scenarios I write the guides for and so I guarantee that some of you may wish to add or subtract from what I have written with your own pieces of intelligence from experience gained in the field. I will gladly read any emails sent to me and then try to go over these guides in the future and take into consideration any information offered to me from readers. But these guides are not meant to be step-by-step manuals about how to fight a battle. They are only meant to give you a quick introduction on the basics of whatever fight you are about to get into.

I hope you will find these guides useful in the field of battle and that I have aided our cause in some small way by creating these. Any feedback is appreciated! My civilian job is in retail management… trust me, criticism will not hurt my feelings.
