Kadettenkorps PBEM Basics

As from the Austrian Vienna Academy Site

By pressing the Start New Scenario button you can play a game against the computer. For PBEM games press the Special Options button. Then press the Play by Email button and to start a new game select 'Yes' at the next screen. You will then be at the same screen as if you were starting a game against the computer. The list of scenarios will be displayed and you will pick one that you and your opponent agreed on to play. Once you have selected the scenario press the play button. Be sure to have the CD in the drive before you start up the game!

If you were trying to open an existing PBEM game then at the prompt in the Special menu dialog that asks if you are starting a new game you would respond with 'No' and you would be shown the Battle Selection dialog. Here you need to know the module where the battle/file is located. For instance, a game of Borodino/NIR where you are playing the Raevski Redoubt scenario would be located in the NIR/GR or as it is listed at this dialog screen, 'The Raevski Redoubt.'

Then select the game file that you want to open. The battle starts up and you are asked if you want to view the replay of the previous phase(s). It is highly recommended that you select YES.   Another way to start up the games is to use the Main program executable. This can be a faster way to get into a game for some but for the most part is not the most popular way of starting up a battle.   Each of the BG Napoleonic games has its own Main program executable. For each game they are:

NIR - nir.exe
BGW - bgw.exe
PTW - ptw.exe

Each game also has a set of subdirectories. These subdirectories or subfolders are also known as modules. For instance in the NIR game the BD subfolder is also the BD module. This module has the large Borodino maps. Likewise the SU subfolder is the South of Utitza module. Others are the FF or Fleches module, GR or Great Redoubt and so on.

If you want to get right into the fighting you can open the game right to the battles via a shortcut to the main program (nir.exe for NIR, bgw.exe for BGW and ptw.exe for PTW) found in the Start->Programs menu. Starting new games while in the main program is easy once you get the hang of it. Double click on the appropriate shortcut file and then pick the module that the scenario is in. This depends on the map that was used.

Most of the NIR scenarios use the BD: The Battle of Borodino module but of course one sure way to find out is to load the Front End of the program and note the module name associated with the name of the scenario. Once you get used to this it will be easier to start new scenarios using the Main Program.

You will need to know the name of the file for the scenario that you wish to play. It might look something like this:

bd_e.scn

To play a new PBEM game make sure that you first pull down the Special menu and select Play By Email as the option. Then when you go to open the new file it will be the first turn in your new PBEM game!

Of course if you open the game using the Front End (bg_start.exe) you will find the name of the scenario. The names are in order of the number of the scenario or for BG Waterloo by alphabetical order. This is probably by far the most popular way of starting up a new scenario.

In the club we mainly play games by email (PBEM). In this form we do our phase(s) and then send the file by email to our opponent. We commonly use Winzip to compress the file and then send the .zip file to our enemy. This saves on space and time in email transmissions. The program is readily available on the web. You can find it at Download.com.
