Greetings, My opponent and I just finished this scenario. We both had read a little about the historical battle, and felt that the game scenario did not depict the muddy and stormy conditions well enough. Despite that, the scenario was interesting. The battle developed into three areas of contact between the opposing armies: Germantown area, West Ox Road to Warrenton Turnpike area, and a minor area around Centreville. With the weather effect the visibility was limited, but movement did not seem to be limited. The final result was a minor CSA victory. I would recommend this scenario.

I believe that the Union OOB might be a little messed up in this one --- JL Reno as IX Corps commander is not being used - only JL Reno as 2nd Division commander of IX Corps - with the upshot that BG Isaac Stevens is shown as IX Corps commander -and there is no divisional commander of the Union IX Corps. I am not sure if this is messed up in the 2nd Bull Run scenarios as the IX Corps enters as reinforcements - I guess I could edit the scenario and advance the turns to a point where they'd have entered (and keeping in good practice --save the file as a differently named file from the stock). But -the absence of a divisional commander is a reasonably significant deal. Reno being on the map in his divisional only capacity is probably wrong. Although I don't entirely know what you do about commanders with dual responsibilities. And I only noticed it because I knew that Stevens was KIA'd in this action (and he was married to a distant cousin). I think he was also the first territorial governor of what would eventually become Washington state (or one of the first). https://www.battlefields.org/learn/maps ... 400-515-pm |

Just in case anyone else gets here with this still unanswered (I looked around couldn't find anything) as it's a little confusing, maybe deliberately so since Kierney and Stevens were KiA during the battle? A few points concerning Union scenario OOB versus wiki one here:
MG Joe Hooker appears on map as a Division Commander with NO units at all under his command. III Corps MG Heintzelman not present, you've got MG Kierney as 1st Division Commander with only Birney's Brigade and some 1st Div arty under him, so no Corps commander. IX Corps BG Stevens as Corps Commander (he actually was only 1st Div Commander) with Christ and Leasure Brigades reporting to him with some Div Arty too, so no Div Commander for 1st Div. IX Corps MG Reno as only 2nd Div Commander with Nagle and Ferrero Brigades (and some attached arty) and not subordinate to Stevens, so no Corps Commander for 2nd Div. Not sure like OP if this is as it should be, I'm a new player so just working it as best I can i.e. just trying to keep units under whoever their nominal commander is within command range. |
