Post subject:  Gettysburg, June 2nd

For anyone that's interested or just needs a summer vacation idea, here's a great opportunity for us Civil War enthusiasts. On June 2nd, The Friends of Gettysburg Foundation is having their annual volunteer workday. A couple hundred of Friends' members from all over the country gather in Gettysburg to help out at the National Park. Projects usually include reconstucting historic fencelines, painting historic structures, power-washing monuments...the list goes on. Last year we painted "Culp Barn", "The George Weikert barn", and installed rail fences near the Henry Spangler farm off Emmitsburg Road in order to restore the battlefield to what it historically looked like during the time of the battle. The national park service is also involved in removing non-historic vegetation at the battlefield (some near Devil's Den) and also planting trees where they once were. More peach trees are being planted to expand the Peach Orchard to it's historic size.

So anyway, I'm trying to convince the wife that this would be a great opportunity for a "second honeymoon" :). So if you ever wanted to help preserve Gettysburg and get closer to the battlefield here's a real way to do so and to actually get to preserve some very historic structures and sites.

Col Denner,

I've been a member of the Friends for a long time, seen them do a lot of things for the park over the years. Unfortunately my schedule and the fact that I live about 4 hours away has prevented me from having the opportunity to take part in their workdays. However the wife and I have been going to the Fall Muster for a number of years now. If you're also a member and plan to attend this years Fall Muster we'll have to arrange to meet.

Gen Miller,

Glad to know you're a member too. It's a great group to be involved in. Maybe one day we can meet at an event.

Unfortunately for us, we live about 12 hrs away and can't make it to the regular events. This year I was able to convince the wife to attend the volunteer day on June 2 as part of our "vacation." Her idea of vacation is not working so I may be digging post holes without her while she's taking in more relaxing events at the local mall. :)
